Driven to Lead: Dorian Troy Davis, SGA President, North Carolina A&T State University

What makes you a D.R.I.V.E.R. (Determined. Reliable. Innovative. Visionary. Emerging. Resourceful.)?
I am a D.R.I.V.E.R. because I have a spirit that reflects all aspects of what a “D.R.I.V.E.R.” consists of. My most admirable attribute is my vision. I am able to create a vision and translate it to others so that it is understandable. What drives me is the younger generation. I believe that it is my job as well as others in my generation to make the world better for those who come after us.

What is your dream job?
My dream job is to own a fundraising firm that specializes in fundraising, philanthropy and development for underrepresented organizations such as minority groups and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
The accomplishment that I am most proud of is attending North Carolina A&T State University. It was an honest battle for me to attend my university because of opinions from family and administrators at my high school, who attempted to deter my decision. A lot of people do not understand the foundation, power and scholarship that HBCU’s provide and against their opinions, I decided to attend the #1 HBCU, North Carolina A&T!

What is the best advice that you have ever received?
The best advice that I have ever received was that people will not see the things that you have done in the present. They will not see the blood, the sweat, the tears or the work, but they will experience the outcome in years to come.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
In 5-10 years, I see myself with my masters degree in non-profit management (fundraising and grant writing) and already owning my business. By the age of 30, I hope to already have an established brand that is known across the east coast and the south; a brand known for assisting HBCU’s and other minority organizations with development.

What are your hobbies/interests/special talents?
My favorite hobby is art. I love all aspects of visual arts from painting, to sculpting, to sketching. I use art as a form of therapy and an outlet for me to evoke my emotions into a visual masterpiece that others can relate to.

What are your “favs?”
Book: The Kite Runner
Quote: “Loving yourself is not selfish, but it is self-full.”
Song: “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson
Food: Greek/Mediterranean
Movie: Mean Girls
City: Charleston, SC

What advice would you like to share to help encourage other students or recent graduates to “keep driving?”
The best advise that I can give to my generation is that mistakes are okay to make as long as you learn from them. Too often, young people are too afraid to venture out of their comfort zones and end up missing multiple opportunities of growth and development because of the fear of failure. At North Carolina A&T, our motto is, “Explore. Discover. Become.” In order to become who you want to be, you must discover yourself, but before you discover yourself you must take the chance to explore the unknown.

What are your thoughts about what YOUniversity Drive is doing to help motivate, educate and inspire our next generation of leaders?
